BRIEF AND INSPIRATIONS MODERN BALLET
The Creative Genesis
The agency House Ldn challenged us to create a ballet performance with a modern and bold interpretation. To step outside the conventional boundaries, we aimed to infuse modernity by drawing inspiration from contemporary elements in ballet and haute couture.
The initial idea, to avoid clichés, was to approach the tutu differently, akin to William Forsythe's ballet "The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude" or the costumes of "Das Fräulein von S" from the Stuttgart Opera (01).
We sought to give the dancers a visually impactful piece, representing both the opulence of the opera and the requested modernity. That's why we drew inspiration from Schiaparelli's creations (02) to design the hats.
Our goal was to infuse fierceness and femininity into our dancers, taking inspiration from the female character in Roland Petit's ballet "Le Jeune Homme et La Mort" (03). This led us to draw inspiration from Thierry Mugler's corsets (04) to elegantly and assertively dress the dancers' busts.
FROM THE IDEA TO REALITY
Costume design
Once the mood board is completed, it's time to bring together all the elements into a single drawing, called a mock-up, which becomes the reference for all stakeholders in the project.
For this one, we aimed to evoke the modernity and elegance of the opera and the event by using black and gold as the main colors. All lines are simple and refined, like a quick and precise sketch, to avoid cluttering the silhouettes.
We also decided to eliminate pink tights to have a bare leg and skin-colored pointe shoes to lengthen the line to the maximum.
Savoir-faire
The next step is to find the materials, create patterns, make prototypes, and conduct fittings where we modified certain elements: the gradient of the tutu has evolved into a black and gold bicolor to better align with the overall spirit of the costume.
On the beauty side, we collaborated with our head makeup artist to assemble a mood board, aiming to create make-up looks that perfectly complement the overall appearance.
STAGING / MUSIC & SOUND
In addition to our auditions to discover ballet dancers who could bring our vision to life, we also conducted talent searches to set the music for our show.
Once again, House Ldn challenged us to find something "out of the box."
With this goal in mind, we collaborated with the group "Les Funky Frogs" to create an entirely a cappella performance composed of 32 singers. This choir, combined with our dancers, all dressed in black and gold, on the grand staircase of the Palais Garnier, inspired us to push the boundaries of our creativity for a result befitting the event.
